Our Lady of Mount Carmel: 900 years
before Christ, the Prophet Elias retired to Mount Carmel (the name
means "a Garden") to seek God in solitude. His example
was followed by many hermits and thus a religious order originated.
After Christianity was brought to the holy men of Mt. Carmel by
the Apostles, they preached devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary,
adopting the name of Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. During
the Crusades they fled the Saracens and established themselves precariously
in Europe. There in 1251, St. Simon Stock praying for the survival
of his community in England had a vision of Our Lady giving him
a Scapular (her mantle), as the symbol of her protection.—Ed. |
